Activity Proposals

Every CAS project or activity starts out by writing a proposal. This shows thoughtful consideration and awareness of what the activity is and what you hope to learn from it. It is important to remember that ALL CAS ACTIVITIES MUST:
  1. Be real & purposeful, with significant outcomes;
  2. Pose a challenge -- tasks must extend the student yet be achievable in scope;
  3. Involve planning, review of progress, & reporting;
  4. Engage the student in reflection on outcomes and personal learning.
ALL FOUR criteria must be satisfied for an activity to be considered CAS-worthy.

In addition, all activities must have an adult supervisor.

How to propose an activity for your program:
  1. Download a copy of the CAS Activity Proposal form to your desktop. RENAME A COPY of this Proposal Form for each activity you want to propose. (TIP: Use the Activity Name as part of filename. For example, try  "StudentCouncil_Proposal.pdf")
  2. Edit it using a PDF reader. MAC users can use the Preview program while Windows and/or Linux users are strongly advised to  download and use the free Nitro PDF Reader. (You won't be able to save a copy of your responses if you use the free Adobe reader.)
  3. Answer the pre-planning questions and provide other relevant information about the activity you wish to undertake.
  4. Create a new post on your blog and publish your responses and activity information. This will serve as your first journal entry for this activity. (You can copy-and-paste the important questions from this Word document into a new blog post to get you started.)
  5. Print a the form you just filled up and sign it. (As much as possible, please print on both sides or use recycled paper.)
  6. Present your completed Activity Proposal form to your potential activity supervisor. Discuss your responses and agree on the goals for the activity, as well as the means for monitoring and assessing your progress. Have your supervisor sign your form and provide the necessary contact information. This signifies his/her commitment to monitor and guide you throughout the duration of the activity, and to evaluate your performance at its completion.  (In case your potential supervisor is not familiar with the CAS program, send him/her a copy of the Activity Supervisor Guide (this explains the duties and responsibilities of an Activity Supervisor) via email or in print. You can also share a copy of the CAS Info sheet with them. Please do this for any non-school-personnel supervisors.)
  7. Submit the signed form/s to your CAS Advisor (or CAS Coordinator) for approval.
  8. Update/Clarify the responses and information on your proposal blog post in case of feedback or follow-up questions from your Advisor or Coordinator.
  9. Have fun and learn!

"Do not count the hours.
Instead, show that your CAS experience was an on-going and a significant undertaking.
Do not allow your experience to become "binge-CAS",
where activities are crammed into mini-vacations,
specifically engaging in last-minute activities that are not planned.
All activities do not need to last 18 months.
Some activities will be shorter than others, but
CAS cannot be a series of short-term activities."

(-from the Robinson Secondary School CAS guide)
*Remember: Activities MUST receive approval to officially be part of your program.
